Rongomaraeroa Marae
HAPU: Ngāti Kere, Ngāti Manuhiri
BACKGROUND:
I am a medical practitioner with a history of general practice and public health medicine, academic teaching and research. I am fluent of Maori and am an ardent ‘Porangahau-phile’ ie one who thinks that Porangahau is the centre of the world. I have a sound understanding of our tribal and hapu history, our Kahungunu-tanga and the nature of colonisation and land loss here in Hawkes Bay. I am presently working as a General Practitioner for Hauora Heretaunga, the primary health care clinic at the Taiwhenua o Heretaunga in Hastings.
ASPIRATIONS FOR HE TOA TAKITINI:
There is no going back – we cannot regain our lost lands – but we have everything else to gain. He Toa Takitini is the vehicle for the Heretaunga-Tamatea marae communities to build an economic resource for the future. We should also be building the relationships that allow this resource to flourish. A major outcome is the development of our Ngāti Kahungunu profile in the Hawkes Bay community and alongside this, the strengthening of our personal and tribal values in relation to te reo me nga tikanga Maori.
